On Friday, April 27, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office issued a warning about a scam in the Lake Charles area targetting local businesses. Michael L. Derrick of Westlake has been arrested after turning himself in at 8:25 p.m., on Saturday, April 28, said a media release.

CPSO originally got complaints about Michael L. Derrick, 49, of Westlake, LA, "attempting to scam local businesses by saying he is selling a local restaurant's sandwiches for a fundraiser". Derrick was reportedly using fake names as well, and claiming the money was for family members who were sick, and or required surgery. Going as far as telling victims to pay upfront and have the food delivered later.

Derrick was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with theft less than $1,000. He's being held on an in-state detainer, and his bond is set at $5,000.
