A traffic stop of a suspected impaired driver on Thursday, February 1, after 5 am, in Lake Charles led to the arrest of a Texas man who racked up multiple charges including an attempted 1st-degree murder charge of a trooper.

According to a media release from Louisiana State Police Trooper Derek Senegal, Julio R. De Los Rios, 25, of Donna, Texas, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck on Common Street near Gayle Street when a trooper pulled him over for a traffic violation. During the standardized field sobriety testing, De Los Rios became physically combative and fought the trooper. The trooper discharged his service weapon during the altercation, but did not strike De Los Rios. He was taken into custody without injury and transported to Troop D for processing, said Senegal. The Trooper was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

De Los Rios refused to give a toxicology sample when he was taken to Troop D. A judge approved a request for a "no refusal" search warrant allowing troopers to obtain blood samples without his consent.

De Los Rios racked up multiple charges, including attempted first degree murder of a police officer; resisting an officer by force; second degree battery; DWI second offense; and improper turning at an intersection. He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center, and his bond set at $115,000.

The Lake Charles Police Department and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office were on hand to assist Troop D with the incident.

There's still an ongoing investigation.
