2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials For Boxing In Lake Charles

USA Boxing reports the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials For Boxing is taking place at the Lake Charles Civic Center Dec. 7-15, 2019. Over the last few years Louisiana has hosted several boxing events, to include the 2017 National Golden Gloves Tournament. However, this will mark the first time the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee chose the City of Lake Charles to host one of their boxing events.

USA Boxing Events Manager, Michael Campbell, said of this years Olympic trials, “USA Boxing is tremendously excited to join with Lake Charles to bring the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing to the Gulf Coast,”  Campbell says, “The city’s warm hospitality and Southern charm, great people, climate and culture make for a perfect fit to crown our next generation of champions and give our boxers, coaches and officials a special experience.”

Equally excited about having the honor of being the host city is the President/CEO of the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau is. Kyle Edmiston. Sharing the enthusiasm Edmiston said, “Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana are honored to host the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials for Boxing and USA Boxing National Championships. Our destination is looking forward to showing these gifted athletes our unique brand of Southern Hospitality. The community is so excited to be part of history-in-the-making as this prestigious event will be the focus of sports fans this December."

In addition the 2019 USA Boxing National Championships will take place at the Golden Nugget Lake Charles Hotel. The 13 boxers who win their weight-class at the finals will make up the USA Boxing junior and youth teams for 2020. These boxers will move on to compete for their spot on Team USA and a chance to box at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The Olympic Qualifying Events take place January through May 2020.

USA Boxing Executive Director, Mike McAtee said, “The 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing will be the culmination of what began last December,” he continued, “This event will feature the 104 best boxers in the nation, boxing for 13 spots, as well as over 700 boxers that will be our future 2024 and 2028 Olympian's.”
