Amazing Photo of “Highway 90″ Bridge, Now the I-10 Bridge

Back in July, I ran across some old photos of the I-10 bridge being built that Trend Gremillion posted with Southwest Louisiana Archeology. That man always has the coolest vintage photos from the past of our area. The bridge we now know as the I-10 Bridge has had a few names as time progressed. Originally it was built on Highway 90 as a replacement for the drawbridge that commuters crossed for a very long time. In 1951, it was officially named the Louisiana Memorial World War II Bridge. Later on, in life, it would become the I-10 Bridge and the only major bridge in the area. 210 came along in 1962 and here we are with two bridges.

Construction began on the bridge in 1948 and featured walkways for you to be able to cross the bridge on foot. The Interstate Highway System became a thing later on and did not allow walkways on main interstate highways due to safety concerns, so that's why we can't walk across it anymore.

This picture shared by the Louisiana DOTD shows workers on the actual bridge itself from 1950. You can see the concrete forms on the side that were once used as a "sidewalk". I couldn't imagine having to walk up and down that steep thing, each morning to actually get to work let alone not having a giant panic attack for fear of tripping and falling off.
