A baseball pitcher from Barbe is a candidate for a very exclusive honor, the MaxPreps National Player of the Year.

Barbe's ace pitcher, Jack Walker, committed to play baseball for Mississippi State University in 2018. This season, Walker has gone undefeated on the mound with a 12-0 record. He's helped Barbe to a 35-2 overall record which gained them the number four ranking in the country, according to MaxPreps.

Walker has smoked his competition this year with 97 strikeouts in 63.2 innings pitched, and a 0.44 ERA.

Walker could be the first player from Louisiana to win this coveted award, as none of the previous 12 award winners are from The Boot. MaxPreps also states that even though the current ten players are on the list, that could change as some high schools across the country are still in the middle of their regular seasons due to varying COVID-19 protocols that delayed season openers this year.
