Kim Potter, the 26-year veteran Minnesota officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright, was arrested Wednesday morning. For now, Potter has been booked on second-degree manslaughter charges. However, I don't think those charges are going to fly with the public, considering the traffic stop was prompted by air fresheners (profiling) and Wright was wanted on a misdemeanor for missing a hearing on a gun charge

The nation has no appetite for rogue police officers, especially when the killing of another unarmed Black man took place ten miles away from the George Floyd case. Further, if officer Potter can't tell the difference between a gun on one side of her utility belt and a taser on the other, she should've been taken off the street a long time ago.

When you factor in the meat of how the 20-year-old was killed, the cop's claims just don't add up. First, it's very unlikely Potter didn't know she grabbed her police-issue Glock. The standard issue is either a 17, 19, or 26 and is much heavier than a taser. These guns also have safeties on the triggers that you can feel, while tasers do not. Tasers come in bright neon colors so they can be easily distinguished from any other police weapon. Finally, and most importantly, according to the Brooklyn Center Police Department protocol, officers are to wear their guns on their dominant sides with their tasers on the opposite sides of their bodies. Why? To prevent mistakenly killing someone.

According to reports, Potter’s arrest came one day after she resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department. The officer turned in her badge three days after she shot Wright at point blank range during a traffic stop.

The 20-year-old's death has sparked widespread protests in Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association report the former police officer retained defense attorney, Earl Gray.
