Voters In Georgia Send A Message And Make History

The most high-stakes runoffs in the last decade have finally been decided. The battle for what political party would have control of the United States Senate was at hand. The November 2022 Midterms for the seat did not declare a winner with 50% of the vote for the state, forcing the incumbent candidate, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, into a runoff with his Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

The voters of Georgia have made their voices heard and Tuesday, chose Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, giving Democrats an outright majority of 51 to 49 in the Senate. A huge victory for the party and President Joe Biden. Capping off a less-than-stellar Midterm for the GOP. Warnock had 4 million votes and led Walker by 37,000 votes. It wasn't enough to achieve the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff.

The 2022 Midterm election is historic for many reasons. Namely, the president's party usually loses ground during midterm elections, voter turnout that included a record number of new and younger voters, and it was the first time two black candidates met in a runoff election in Georgia, just to point out a few.

Hopefully, the U.S. government will get on with it and not remain heavily divided. Despite Republicans narrowly claiming control of the House, there is plenty of room for both parties to find middle ground and work together. However, not everyone is holding their breath.
