According to a CPSO media release, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's deputies were called out to the 5000 block of Leon Drive on Friday, May 25, at approximately 7:30 a.m., in reference to an attempted sexual assault of an elderly woman as she stood outside her home. As the victim screamed for help the suspect fled.

Coincidently, the Lake Charles Police Department was also dealing with a similar incident nearby. Through a joint effort between both agencies and help from the Louisiana State Police, they were able to track down the suspect Richard Wayne Barras of Lake Charles (North Flounder Drive).

Barras is currently in the Calcasieu Correctional Center on a $900,000 bond, on one count of attempted 1st-degree rape.
