Saints Continue to Meet With Cantrell Over Fans at Home Games
The Times-Picayune and New Orleans Advocate are confirming reports that the New Orleans Saints will be playing their game this weekend (on Sunday, October, 25th) against the Carolina Panthers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the Big Easy. It was previously mentioned that they might take a stroll down I-10 and play at LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, but the Superdome it is, at least for this week. One of the reasons for the team to engage in talks with LSU officials was to actually have fans to play in front of. New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell has consistently denied the team's pleas to have fans at home games, despite the blessing of Governor John Bel Edwards amid the current coronavirus crisis.
Saints officials met on Monday with the mayor, her medical advisors, and professional members of Oschner Health to discuss plans to gradually phase fans back into home games at the dome. Saints spokesperson Greg Bensel told NOLA.com "The city continues to see COVID positivity rates remain stable, and they currently have one of the lowest rates in the nation. We all agree that the priority is to make sure our city’s residents and our fans are safe and not to regress from the progress that has been made. We look forward to providing our fans more information shortly."
About 750 non ticketed family members of staff, officials and team members have been allowed to watch two home games in the Superdome, and a report from earlier this week claims that not having fans attend games is costing Louisiana around $15 million in lost tax revenue. Yikes.
