Why have one when two is twice as nice?  That seems to be the piece of wisdom that applies to the situation surrounding the state song of Louisiana.  Before I continue the story of how we might soon be doubling up on the musical theme(s) that define our state - do you know what the current state song is?  As it stands right now, the 1970 tune penned by Doralice Fontane “Give Me Louisiana,” holds that honor.

If you didn't know, don't beat yourself up - you aren't alone.  Many long-time Louisiana residents mistakenly thought it was our very own former Gov. Jimmie Davis’ version of “You Are My Sunshine.”

According to the Advocate, Louisiana House Speaker Pro Tem Tanner Magee is championing a new bill that would officially make the above version of "You Are My Sunshine," the state song - but that's not all.  A second state song is also outlined by the bill - if it passes, Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” would be the official "cultural" song of Louisiana.

Hank Williams "Jambalaya," was also considered due to the swampy, bayou imagery the song uses which obviously ties it closely to Louisiana.  Unfortunately, since Williams was born in Alabama the song didn't make the final cut.

The bill now moves to Governor John Bel Edwards desk for a signature.
