This year has truly been overwhelming and sometimes trying to maintain a calmness about yourself and not being overwhelmed is a hard feat to pull off. According to and writer Kiara Mijres, there are four things you should try when you feel like you can't go on.

  • Take morning and afternoon walks in the park a regular routine. You would be surprised what a little outside air away from emails and conference calls could do to help you relieve a little stress. You get to move around outside and take in all of the fresh air from the trees and simply be by yourself or walk with a friend and leave the work conversations for just that: work.
  • Take a week where you limit social interactions or, if possible, take them away completely. Many of us work in a field where we interact with people all of the time. My job calls for it every day. Whether it’s talking with a listener on the request line, a remote broadcast, or conference calls with my staff or market president, I tend to always be talking with someone. We should all take some time when we are away from all of those things. If possible, take a day off and simply send calls to your voicemail, and don’t get on social media. This could be a trap, as there are so many moments of negative news and if you ingest to much negativity, you will be consumed by it in the long run.
  • If there's one thing the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us, it is we need to work on our health habits. Being confined to a home and not knowing the immediate future of something can make you eat all of the wrong things. We have to look at choosing healthy foods for meals and snacks. This would include plenty of fruits and vegetables in the place of candy bars and over-saturated food we normally consume.
  • Finally, consider prioritizing your day by what’s most important to the least important. It is best to begin your day with the most important task. If possible, try to work those tasks in a certain amount of time, which could help you move a little faster and possibly finish up your day a little earlier than expected.

Try to keep at least 25% of energy for yourself. Regardless of how strong you are and how much energy you feel like you have, we all run out eventually and the recovery could take longer then we think. At the end of the day, regardless of the job and how much we are loved, we have to keep in mind that if we don’t take care of ourselves, we will be just another number.
